Building Project
The History
Rugged Cross Tabernacle has rented various buildings over the years for
our worship services. All of them have been in the Chugiak Alaska area.
Beginning at the old CBA schoolhouse which served us for many years, then
the schoolhouse annex building (shed) next door that the Church fixed
up. This building many remember for the quaint heating system. Ask Bro.
Frank about preaching over the noise of the space heater sometime. The
landlord raised the rent for this spot and then eventually asked us to
leave.
From there we went to the Saddler furniture building just down the road
a mile or so. This building seemed to be made up of military re-locatable
buildings stuck together. We rented a quarter of this place but had the
run of the entire unit. Also cold and somewhat draughty we remodeled the
sanctuary area to remove some of the area that we had to heat (and the
rooflines from the other parts of the buildings jutting out).
We then moved to downtown Eagle River to the United Lumber building. This
was on Main Street and was by far our best location for visibility. Of
course we had to remodel and spend some money on the place. Rent began
to go up here as well as our other locations and we moved again to our
present location on Sherman Road near Sister Ruby's house.
The building we are in now was originally built to be a church but only
the lower level was built. We have spent a bit of money on upgrades to
this place as well. The roof is actually meant to be the floor of the
upper story and was only intended to be a roof temporarily. Because of
this the "roof" has occasionally leaked or maybe steadily leaked is a
better way to put it, and has made for some soggy moments. Attempts were
made to buy this building but the owners valued it more than we felt it
was worth. We moved out of this building for a while going back to the
CBA school house with the idea we would save some money but the comfort
level of the Sherman road building won out and we have returned more determined
than ever to have our own building.
The Church purchased a three-acre parcel at the base of Bear Mountain
four years ago that was a nice location but proved to be unbuildable due
to road engineering in the area. We sold this to a home builder and have
made a fair profit.
With the purchase of 2.5 acres on south Birchwood loop and the building
of our own 9600 square foot log building Rugged Cross Tabernacle's wandering
days are over. Please come visit and worship the Lord with us
